“Our music is contributive rather than competitive,” the great, late pianist Horace Tapscott said, speaking about the Black community arts movement of south Los Angeles. This forms the core sentiment behind Indaba Is, which is curated by artists Thandi Ntuli and Siyabonga Mthembu and brings together some of the brightest minds and talents in the South African music landscape. The eight-track album is scheduled for release at the end of January by London-based label Brownswood Recordings.
Indaba Is forms part of a series of compilations providing overviews of the jazz scenes in various cities. Previous releases by Brownswood Recordings include We Out Here (2018) in London and Sunny Side Up (2019) in Melbourne, Australia. …
“Guitarist and producer Nicolas Repac makes jazz and world-influenced electronic music that incorporates his own guitar chops alongside samples of classic jazz and other sounds. Although Repac started out as a jazz guitarist in his 20s, he set the instrument aside in favour of more electronic-based world music pursuits and production for over a decade. Returning to the instrument in his 30s, Repac rediscovered his love of jazz and began incorporating his skills as a producer, DJ, and studio professional with his guitar skills.” Matt Collar
It was after meeting Charles Duvelle, co-founder (with Pierre Schaeffer) of the mythical Ocora Radio France label, in 2015, and his subsequent discovery of the ‘Prophet’ collection, which is dedicated to capturing the rarest traditional music from everywhere on the planet, that Nicolas Repac had a yearning to revisit the dreamy wonderland of his sampling art. …

uGaba The Migration is the beautiful, highly anticipated second album by South African saxophonist Sisonke Xonti released in November. This was to be a momentous year for Sisonke, as he was the recipient of the prestigious 2020 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz and the year was set to be one full of performances, tours, and other opportunities. Due to the pandemic and the country heading into national lockdown, Sisonke instead focused his energy on writing and recording the album. It features him on tenor and soprano sax, along with Yonela Mnana (piano and vocals), Benjamin Jephta (double bass), Sakhile Simani, (trumpet), Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums), Tlale Makhene (percussion) and additional lyrics and poetry by Keorapetse Kolwane and Teboho Moleko. The album gets its record release via As-Shams records next year. For now, it is available on all good online platforms. …
Aulos is a woodwind instrument from ancient Greece, an age-old counterpart to today’s tenor saxophone. In its mythological meaning the aulos symbolises ecstasy and this-worldliness. It was played by the Satyrs who surrounded Dionysos, the god of earthly bliss.
Aulos is Jimi Tenor’s second album for Philophon. The record features musicians seen on his Philophon debut Order of Nothingness. Beside our Finnish singer and multi-instrumentalist we have again drummers Ekow Alabi Savage from Ghana and Max Weissenfeldt from Germany, the latter of whom is the producer of the album.
The release of JID 004, Azymuth’s newest studio album produced by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammed, saw giants of the Brazilian jazz scene seamlessly collaborate with two legendary hip-hop producers to create something fresh, imaginative and beautiful. There’s a lot to be said for the collaborative nature of Brazilian music. From it’s inception it has been fuelled by intersecting cultures and their respective sounds. Centuries on, this spirit remains at the forefront of the minds of the brightest Brazilian musicians. I spoke to Azymuth (Ivan ‘Mamão Conti’, Alex Malheiros and Kiko Continentino) over video call shortly before the release of the album. …
