UNTITLED (Black Is) & UNTITLED (Rise)

SAULT is an anonymous UK collective of musicians and producers, with very little known about any of the members. UNTITLED (Black Is) came out in June of this year, and spans soul, funk, drill and spoken word focused on examining and exposing the experiences of black people, specifically in America. The Juneteenth release date further positions the album as a direct call to resistance against the suffering of African Americans.

The newer half of this double album, UNTITLED (Rise), is full of the same defiant activism, but the music is framed with a more celebratory, hopeful mood. Though the tunes are more dance-floor and groove oriented than on UNTITLED (Black Is), the references to funk, dub and batucada (a sound steeped in resistance, struggle and the simultaneous celebration of black Brazilian culture) centre the album as an ode to the continued defiance and strength of the black diaspora and their allies, a stylised motivational playlist for all of us working to execute a global change.

To hear tracks from these two extraordinary albums, tune in to Morning Mari* every morning this week, from 8:45am BST.
